Investigations, disputes and appeals

Investigations, disputes and appeals

If you have ever been subject to a tax investigation from HMRC you will be acutely aware how time consuming and stressful they can be.

Not to mention the potential underlying threat to your reputation and the costly penalties which can be imposed if errors have been made or obligations missed.

If you have been approached by HMRC then you will need a tax adviser who has an expert understanding of the current tax legislation in the context of your situation and who understands HMRC procedures and processes to effectively deal with the enquiry.

Our tax experts are skilled negotiators and can save you time and money.

Our services include:

  • Helping you with all types of tax enquiries and investigations e.g. PAYE, Self-Assessment, NI, VAT/
  • Advising you on HMRC powers to demand documentation and information, and what needs to be done to respond and comply with the demand/investigation requirements
  • Negotiating with HMRC on your behalf to ensure the best possible outcome to any tax disputes, appeals and tribunals

Tax Investigations Insurance

Many of our clients have been surprised when they have received a tax enquiry letter from HMRC. The fact is a good number of enquiries are randomly chosen, but this doesn’t remove the stress and anxiety from receiving such a communication.

All taxpayers are increasingly at risk from receiving a tax enquiry. We encourage our business and private individual clients to consider taking out an insurance policy to protect themselves against the costs of our fees associated with dealing with a potential enquiry.

Depending on the nature of the enquiry things can quickly escalate and go into greater depth than was initially expected. For this reason, we advise our clients to protect themselves against the time and cost involved in us defending the enquiry on your behalf.

Tax investigations protection is an annual policy that gives you reassurance that our costs are covered if you receive an enquiry notice from HMRC.

If HMRC is not satisfied with the response to the enquiry and decides to issue a penalty, or charge interest on any unpaid tax, the Tax Investigations Protection Policy we offer would not cover these costs – only our fees associated with defending the enquiry on your behalf are covered.
