Companies House ID Checks Coming Soon

Companies House identity verification guide

Companies House identity verification is being rolled out for directors, people with significant control (PSCs), and anyone who files on behalf of a company.

Currently voluntary, the process will become mandatory from autumn 2025. Verification will be required in the following situations:

  • When submitting your company’s confirmation statement
  • Upon appointment as a director
  • When an individual becomes a PSC

In future, it will be a legal requirement for all directors and PSCs to verify their identity. Failure to do so may result in financial penalties.

To avoid delays or issues, directors and PSCs are encouraged to complete verification before the deadline.

How to verify your identity

There are three approved methods for identity verification with Companies House:

Online (via GOV.UK One Login)

  • Use photo ID (e.g., passport or driving licence)
  • Takes around 10–15 minutes
  • You’ll be guided to verify via mobile app or browser
  • Free of charge

In person at a Post Office

  • Visit a branch offering in-branch verification
  • Enter initial details online
  • Bring photo ID
  • Also free of charge

Via an Authorised Corporate Service Provider

  • Typically offered by accountants or lawyers
  • A fee may apply
  • Ideal for companies seeking a managed service

Once verified, you’ll receive a Companies House personal code — a unique identifier that will be required when filing certain documents (e.g., your confirmation statement).

Why verify early?

The online process is quick, but verifying early helps avoid last-minute issues. Delays in verification could impact your ability to meet filing deadlines once the rules take effect.
